Latest Look of Fennec (Mobile Firefox)

Posted on May 18, 2008

The plan for Mobile Firefox was announced in October last year, and the Mozilla community is now very busy developing it.

Fennec is the code name for Mobile Firefox. A fennec is a desert fox, and you may have seen one in a TV animation. A fennec is smaller than a normal fox and has big ears, so I think the name suits Mobile Firefox well.

The Mozilla community has released the source code for Fennec along with a guide on how to build it. Building it is a little intricate because it has not been merged into the Mozilla trunk yet.

After building and running it, you can see the following appearance.

Flock: Editing Bookmark

The basic browser features, such as the navigation bar and bookmark menu, have already been implemented. However, panning is a little slow, and zooming is not working in the latest code.

Fennec can be built in the Maemo Scratchbox and run on XULRunner, so I'll post a guide on how to build and run it on the N810 later. It would be helpful if you gave any feedback to the Mozilla community after testing Fennec.
